2: World Status

It's been updated! Finally! Go check it out. Sorry about the last couple of months.

3: The Future of Hugtopia

It is probably becoming increasingly apparent, but activity and numbers across the board have been dropping over time, and while we love you all and what we've created together, all good things must come to an end. We would much rather go out with a bit of a bang rather than a fart, so to speak, so we are moving towards End Game.

so long and thanks for all the fish )

🎉🎉🎉 Please join us in welcoming and congratulating JADE as the newest member of the mod squad! 🎉🎉🎉

Jade has played a big part in formulating some of the in-game player plots, assisting with city growth, and encouraging plenty of good huggin'. We are really looking forward to seeing what her involvement on the team will do to develop the game further. Please look forward to Hugtopia's future shenanigans! And have a look at the Mod Contact page as we have updated it to include her.

Thank you to everyone who replied on the Event Plotting Post regarding Prompt # 4! We had sufficient feedback to determine how the event will end, so here's how it'll go down:

The urge to gather in the city center plaza will intensify as the weeks progress, culminating in a sudden push on the 29th. Those who venture into the center might notice that once they've lingered in the plaza long enough to imply that they're staying in the vicinity rather than just passing through, the statues will take on a brief sheen, as if they've been dunked in a fresh coat of lacquer, and the eyes of your aligned god's statue will glow. It only lasts for a moment, but the message is clear enough: your presence has been acknowledged. Those who leave and return will find that it happens each time, and the effect grows in intensity the more people gather in the plaza. It occurs whether the new arrival is one of the robotic natives or an offworlder.

Residents might also notice something curious about the plaza itself. Normally, the worms are wont to attack anywhere that people have gathered- houses with multiple residents, businesses with customers, parks with crowds coming through, etc. However, even as the crowd in the central circle grows in number, the worms seem to bypass the area for the most part. It is best to keep the location defended, of course, as those gathered could be easy pickings and the protective vibe isn't in play 100%, but as time passes, it gradually becomes the safest place to gather those who can't defend themselves. On occasion, the sky itself comes to your aid: a worm who comes too close might find itself suddenly electrocuted by a bolt of lightning loosed from a clear sky above. Shards of hail might lead a worm or two in a different direction. These touches are simple but clear enough.

When the 29th rolls around, the statues will begin to pulse in a steady rainbow heartbeat, carrying with it a message on the wind: stay, stay. While not compelled, all those within the plaza will feel the urge to hunker down and stick close together, that their patience is about to be rewarded. With a final pulse in the late afternoon, a wave of iridescent light bursts outwards, sweeping through the air in every direction. It passes through residents, creatures, and buildings harmlessly, but the worms it comes across are frozen in their tracks, reformed into a stone statue. Whatever it was doing at the time - digging, eating, burrowing - becomes its final act. Not all of them are caught up in this tidal wave of power, but most are, and the ones that escape quickly burrow down and into the earth, disappearing...for now. In its aftermath, the city is peppered with ugly stone pillars everywhere, but the danger is finally over and the worms are no more. With a final whispered thanks, the statues stop glowing.

Those who were gathered in the plaza find themselves rejuvenated; their minds are free from that tug at last. More noteworthy perhaps is that the local robotic population who'd temporarily lost their functionality begin to wake up! Their return to full cognition is a mixed bag of emotions, naturally. Confusion at what happened, grief at those who have been lost, gratefulness to their friends and neighbours who stepped up to save them. Expect to be thanked a great deal for your troubles.

Those who weren't in the plaza… the good news is, you haven't been turned to stone. However, the point of gathering in a central area was to allow the gods to concentrate their protection in a singular area, which means that outside of it, they had to get more creative. The end result is that everyone and everything who isn't a worm has fallen asleep. Right where they were, just like that. (Try to fall on your butt and not your sword.) It isn't a terribly long sleep, thankfully. The effects should wear off between 6-12 hours later, and while waking you up is an ordeal and a half, it looks like nothing more serious than a deep, relaxing nap. Maybe you snore. Maybe you drool. Whatever your habits, if you're lucky, your friends will carry you home and tuck you in.

Congratulations on surviving yet again!

Hello, Hugtopians! Thank you for always keeping this community energized and fresh. We appreciate all the great vibes you bring to this little game of ours. We have some big announcements of new things here for all of you!

First, we have new AC Rewards! That's right, folks, just a few new things for everyone to spend those lovely hug points on. 300 point rewards have reopened so excursions outside the barrier and visits to the Archives are back on the table. Please remember to give mods at least 2 weeks notice for both of these rewards in order to give us enough time to both coordinate with you and create the encounter for you! We have also opened the 500 Reward tier with a discount on larger group excursions outside the barrier and terraforming! A new 150 point reward has been added that allows you to bring a creature of your own creation into the game as a wild animal. Please check the details out at the Activity Check & Rewards page.

Also, please be advised that we've slightly changed how you apply for Player Run Businesses. From now on, you will need to submit your business details at the time of your reward request in order to let mods discuss the details with you prior to your business license approval. We hope you enjoy these new rewards, and know that we're always open to more suggestions for rewards at either the Mod Contact or Player Suggestion pages.

Second, we have added a game map and two new information pages, Locations and The Bestiary, to the game. Locations and Setting Details is a page consolidating a lot of our information on our game setting and physical location questions. You'll find the new game map there (thanks to Akai!), along with any information on the gods, the city, the temples, facilities, and amenities that were originally on the Settings or FAQ pages. If you have questions about the game or the city of Havenwell, please still direct them exclusively toward the FAQ. We'll update the relevant pages as we always have. The other page is the Bestiary, which is where you can find information on all the wild beasts and plants that have made an appearance in the game so far. This is also where you can find any new creature creations that players make using the AC Rewards. These do not include player pets, which are considered tamed, private creatures. We'll be using the Bestiary a lot more in the coming days, so please give it a look when you have a chance.

Finally, the World Status page has been updated for May. Our next event plotting post will be dropping soon with another big change, so keep an eye open. As always, thank you to all of you, our players, without whom we wouldn't have a game! We hope you enjoy these changes and updates!

Happy New Year, Hugtopians!

We hope you're all enjoying your holidays and that 2021 kicks off well for us all and that the year brings us plenty of opportunities for mod and player plots alike.

First, the last Activity Check for 2020 has completed with no one having missed it! Congratulations, players! Second, AC Reward point submission deadline has now passed for December 2020, so good luck in 2021. Remember that Activity Check is open all month long and closes on the last day of the month at midnight EST. AC Rewards are due by midnight EST of the 1st of every month. Don't forget these deadlines and be careful of the timezones - we know they can get tricky!

Now, to start off the new year, we've noticed that the Activity Check & AC Rewards page is getting a bit packed with comments. And while 1600 is still a far cry from hitting captcha, it's quite close and if ever someone has trouble with a computer or weak connections, it could take a bit to load the page.

So we've created a new Activity Check page for your use! Please create a new top level with your character name and canon with the following information included:

Old Thread: LINK A link to your old AC thread if you have one
Current Reward Points: How many reward points do you currently have. If you have none, then write 0

EXAMPLE:

From now on, please use this new page for Activity Check. Any submissions to the previous page will be asked to move to the new one. If you notice any links or instances where the old post is referenced rather than the new one, please let us know! The old post will soon be locked from new comments.

The World Status Page has updated for January with some open prompts and overall descriptions of what's going on in Havenwell, so give it a look if you like.

Finally, Reservations are currently open and Applications open on the 2nd! Thank you for sticking with us through 2020 and we hope you continue to enjoy the game through 2021. Glad tidings to everyone!

Hello Hugtopians! Two announcements for you:

1) Hugtopia Discord

We are happy to announce that the Hugtopia Discord is now open and ready to be used! Click here to join. (let us know if the link does not work!)

Make sure you read the rules and introduce yourself before you start posting. Thank you all for your patience in waiting for us to set things up. Please refer to both the rules and the original announcement post regarding our Discord policy for plotting.

2) Activity Check

This is a reminder that Activity Check ends in just over 4 days on 31 December at 11:59:59PM EST.

This month, as our holiday gift to you, we are accepting CHECK-INS for AC if you need it! But you need to post to the AC page to let us know you will be staying.

If you have not posted your AC by the time it is due, you will be removed from the game. If a removal occurs in error, please contact a mod to reverse it within 3 days of AC closing. We won't be issuing strikes this month.

AC Reward points are due in five days on 01 January 2021 at 11:59:59PM EST. For more information on Activity Check Rules and to post your AC and Rewards, see the Activity Check Page.

Also, Reserves will open on December 30th and Applications open on the 2nd!

Hello, Hugtopians!

First, the mod team wants to remind you that Activity Check ends in 5 days on November 30th at 11:59:59PM EST. If you have not posted your AC by then, you will be removed from the game. If you post but fail to make AC by then, you will receive a strike. Taking a strike means you cannot hiatus or take a strike in the next month: you must make AC or you will be removed from the game. AC Reward points are due in 6 days on December 1st at 11:59:59PM EST. For more information on Activity Check Rules and to post your AC and Rewards, check the Activity Check Page. If you're worried about making AC, please contact a mod immediately.

Secondly, we have heard all of your suggestions from the discussion post and we truly appreciate all of them! While we didn't reply directly on the post itself, please know that the mod team had a lot of discussions amongst ourselves about how to best balance what everyone suggested and wanted. For now, these are the things that have been decided.
Results of the Discussion Post )

Most importantly, if you have any concerns, complaints or suggestions regarding any of the changes or features about to be implemented, please don't hesitate to contact us here or via the screened comments on the Mod Contact page. We want to make sure that any changes we are planning to make to the game are satisfactory to the majority of our players, so hearing your voices - whether in support or opposition - is extremely important to us! Thank you for all your kind messages on the previous discussion post, and we hope we can continue to create a welcoming and entertaining environment for everyone.

Greetings, Hugtopians!

We hope you are all doing well. For this November, we have a few important announcements about the game and its future that we would like your input about.

First and foremost, we are opening mod applications! The mod team of Tracy, Akai, and Kaze are looking for one (1) new main mod to join our team. Mod duties are primarily planning and running events, but may also include general shared mod duties such as helping with Activity Check and Rewards, reading and approving character applications, and answering player questions.

We ask that interested applicants A) have a Discord as it is our primary communication method and B) have been in the game long enough to have a good grasp of the game world, lore, and IC and OOC systems.

If you are interested, please PM your application to [personal profile] hugtopiamods. Do NOT post it here. The deadline for application is 11:59:59 PM EST on November 30, 2020. We thank any and all applicants!

Secondly, we are looking for player input on how we run events, applications, and game features after receiving some feedback from players in the community. This is an open post for discussion among players and mods so that we can move the game forward in the direction that you, our community, wants! Every player's input is extremely valuable to us - even if it's just to tell us that you don't want any changes, so please take the time to answer if you can.

1) Regarding Events
A recent suggestion brought to us is to reduce the number of event posts that we have in game. Currently, we have one event post per month, but in the suggested change there would be one big event post every other month, with the interim month used for catch-ups, general player run logs, and/or fallout from the mod-run events.

An alternative suggestion to switching to a bimonthly event schedule is to reduce the number of mod-written prompts per event. Monthly events would have 1 major prompt and 1 minor prompt rather than the current 3 to 4 prompts per event.

Or do you prefer the current system without changes?

2) Regarding Applications
Currently, we have bimonthly applications, but there has been interest expressed in opening applications on a monthly basis instead. Should we change from bimonthly to monthly apps?

In the case of monthly applications, Test Drive Memes would not be posted every month, but rather be done seasonally or every few months instead. If we move to monthly applications, how often would you want TDMs to be posted?

Or should we keep to the current bimonthly cycle?

3) Regarding Game Features, Suggestions, and Concerns
Are there any game features that you would like to see in the game that would make the game easier or better for you? We are currently working on updating some areas of the game, but if you have any areas where you think we could improve, please let us know where and how! We are aware that some players are interested in expanding available AC Rewards, and are always looking for suggestions for redeemable rewards.

Do you want more ability to do player-run plots and events? An easier way to contact mods or other players? More frequent OOC or IC memes? An easier way to suggest events to mods?

4) Hugtopia Public Discord
There has been interest expressed in having an official game Discord chat. Would you want an official game Discord, yes or no? Any official Discord channel would be moderated by the game mods, or by a specially appointed Discord moderator. Do you like the idea of a Discord chat? If so, what direction would you like to see the chat take or NOT take? We're open to your ideas and suggestions for this!

Please note: we understand that Discord chats can result in unintended cliques, so if we do go this route, we would encourage everyone to continue to use the OOC memes and plotting posts so that everyone has the option to be included in event planning, whether they have Discord or not.

Additionally, if you have any concerns or criticisms about the game and how it is run, please feel free to let us know here. If you don't feel comfortable commenting in public, send us your critique via the anonymous enabled Mod Contact Post. We have our inboxes open for any and all comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns that you may have, whether you wish to post them here or there.

Thank you for reading such a long announcement post! We hope the discussion here is productive for everyone. Know that even if we do not respond to every comment, we are definitely reading them and appreciate any and all input and critiques. We hope we can continue to provide a welcoming and interesting experience that all of you can feel satisfied with.

Hello, Hugtopians!

It's our first year anniversary and so we have a big, big, BIG thank you to all players past and present for helping us bring this game to life. We wouldn't be here without all of you, and we want you to know how much we appreciate you. Here are some messages from our mod team!

From Tracy, our head mod:
I just want to thank everyone for making the game work, for being interested and involved. It was really a concept because I saw friends wishing there were more general love/affection games, things that were light-hearted and laidback. And the players and my fellow mods made my silly idea into something that's actually fun. And I love seeing people get excited. It really makes me feel warm inside.

From Akai, our technical mod:
Finding a new game after one ends is always difficult, and settling back into the mod seat can be nerve-wracking after years away. A big thank you to all of the players and my fellow modlies for making the process relatively painless and incredibly fun, helping me form a new nest for myself to get cozy in, and revive that creative spark yet again. I'm delighted to be here and I hope we can continue playing together for many more months to come!

From Kaze, our plot mod:
You've helped us world-build and each brought your own unique flavors to this melting pot game in a way I never could have imagined. We've had growing pains, but through each step you've stayed with us, guided us, and helped us find a way forward to creating a little bit of peace amid a crazy world. This was my first time really taking the reins in building a comprehensive world and creating monthly events, and I'm just so delighted that you're all enjoying it so far. All of your FAQ questions, player plots, shenanigans, even your critiques - I love them. You make this game fantastic with your creativity, and thanks to you, we can continue to strive to better the game for everyone!

We all hope we can continue to grow the game with all of your help, and continue to bring you events and game content that engage and delight you. Thank you for helping us get to our first anniversary. Here's to future adventures together!

In that vein, we'd like to ask you, the players, what you would like to see more of in the game going forward in what is essentially our Season 2!

  • Is there anything you'd like to see changed up? Anything you'd like more of (or less of)?
  • Do you have an idea you'd really like to play out on a larger scale?
  • What general mood or what style of events would you like to see in the game? Keep it primarily slice of life? Start feeding a more consistent and steady plot?

Furthermore, if you have any specific event suggestions or even rough ideas, feel free to toss them over on the Mod Contact page.

Let us know here in the comments. Discuss among yourselves, discuss with us! We're here to listen to what you want this game to be ♥!

Hello folks! A few little things to tidy up and announce.

1) December AC will be check-in only! It's the holiday times, which means we're all very tired and busy, you know how it goes. Just a little present from your friendly neighbourhood mod squad.

You need only comment to your AC thread on the Activity Check/AC Rewards Page with a heads up that you're still with us to pass this month!

If you have already posted and "passed" AC, you are good to go as-is. However, if your AC thread included physical contact that would qualify for AC Rewards, feel free to use it again for Rewards as well when they are posted.

As a head's up, players who passed AC last month with a strike will have their full pass requirement pushed forward to January- meaning if you use the check-in this month for AC, you cannot pass via hiatus or strike next month.

2) A document with all known lore contributions is now available! Find it here. This includes all the information characters who took part in the Archives could have deciphered. No one opted out, so everything that was shared as of now is available.

Characters who were not in the game when the Archives were open can acquire this information through those who did take part in that event. So go make friends and compare notes!

That's it! Carry on.

Hello, Hugtopians!

The mod team wants to remind you that Activity Check ends in four days on November 30th at 11:59:59PM EST. If you have not posted your AC by then, you will be removed from the game. If you post but fail to make AC by then, you will receive a strike. Taking a strike means you cannot hiatus or take a strike in the next month: you must make AC or you will be removed from the game.

AC Reward points are due in five days on December 1st at 11:59:59PM EST. For more information on Activity Check Rules and to post your AC and Rewards, check the Activity Check Page. If you're worried about making AC, please contact a mod immediately. Thank you and good luck, everyone!

As a reminder, characters who joined the game this app cycle are not required to pass AC, and can use any relevant threads for Reward Points.

Also, as a head's up: we've been struggling to get the tags in both communities working properly, but it has been noticed that a lot of the time, they just weren't accessible to players, despite our having a post devoted to using tags so they'd work for everyone. We believe this problem has been resolved! However, if you run into any further issues with tagging entries, please let us know and we'll see if we can fix it. Sorry for the inconvenience, it's been quite the head-scratcher.

Greetings Hugtopians! In addition to our upcoming event's Plotting Post, we have a couple of extra things to address today:

1) LORE/ARCHIVE INFORMATION: we've received a few requests on whether or not the lore acquired is available to all residents of the city, or just the characters who received it. Given it's been some time since the lore was handed out in-game, we'd like to collect it all in one document and make it accessible to everyone. However, since those tidbits were distributed to singular characters, we don't want to take that lore away from people who would prefer it not be shared yet. As such, we'd like you to let us know!

If your character would NOT have shared your lore, please PM the mod account to let us know by November 17th at 11:59:59 PM (EST)! All lore pieces should eventually be publicized, but it's fine if you want a bit more time to hold onto it for player-plot reasons for a bit longer.

This isn't required, but if you're fine with the info being shared, leave a comment here so we can get started.

2) UPGRADE TO VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY: thanks to the assistance of everyone involved in the VR testing, as well as necessary upgrade requests for players who lack robotic bodies, the majority of VR Cafes around town have been upgraded to a full and direct plug-in system that should work for everyone. Comparable to most futuristic VR media (eg. Sword Art Online or The Matrix), this tech can simulate a person's body based on their mental perception of themselves, but it can (at the discretion of both character and player) adjust or ignore physical disabilities for the sake of accessibility- for example, a blind character could "see" via the headset, and someone who has difficulty walking would find no such trouble in the virtual space.

The graphics are not fully 1:1 with reality, to make it easier not to get lost in the game (for safety's sake!) but it's close enough that interactions are comparable to any you might have in person. You can see, touch, and taste, etc. and those perceptions are simulated with surprising accuracy. Many cafes have now fully networked, so you need not be in the same one to interact with another person! Just remember, these are still public spaces...

That's all for now. Carry on!
