The apparitions no longer have a sense of "self" in the same way a normal ghost would. If characters used their powers to communicate with them, they would not receive words, but receive an intense feeling of hunger and an instinct to cling to anything alive and drain it of all thoughts and feelings, until the alive individual ceases to be and joins the apparition.
